She just doesn't LOVE that it's stealing all the thunder away from other Broadway shows.
Earlier this week, we reported on a story claiming that Broadway legend and beloved diva, Patti Lupone, had beef with Cirque du Soleil. In the article, she was quoted as saying that the show was a "big, bad brother" of a show that was too "loud" and "disenfranchised."
Well, apparently, this is all a HUGE misunderstand. Her publicist was kind enough to contact us on the matter EXCLUSIVELY and offered this explanation:
"Patti, as you may know, is one of your diehard fans and reads your website on a regular basis.
She asked me to contact you to clear up some misreporting in the story which you picked up.
She never said that Cirque de Soleil is too loud. She was speaking about over amplification of Broadway in general and how it alienates and distances the audience.
Her remarks to the interviewer about Cirque de Soleil were totally separate from that issue. Patti is a huge fan of Cirque de Soleil. Everytime she’s in Las Vegas she always ends up in the audience of one of their shows.
But she wishes that they would not perform near the Broadway theatre district since their current show at Radio City Music Hall is said to be sapping business away from a lot of Broadway musicals. She feels that Broadway needs all the help it can get."
Okay, first of all, you have no idea how hard it was for us to get past that first sentence. Patti, a diehard fan … of us! WE'RE DEAD. WE'RE DYING! She's a legend, an icon … she's Eva PerĂ³n!!! We're honored! Truly honored!
But more to the point, we couldn't agree with you more Ms. Lupone. We hear what you're saying and as an avid lover of the Great White Way, we see how some of the art of the theater is going unappreciated because of the mad rush to Radio City Music Hall. But fear not! Lovers of Broadway will find their way back to the Theater District, you'll see!
And thanks for reading!!!
