The portfolio would be remarkable enough on its own: a group of talented photojournalists working together to capture America, on its birthday. But what really made this Fourth of July project stand out is that the archive will be preserved and published by the Library of Congress, in an agreement with the Facing Change collective that may open new avenues for photojournalists.
As the Lens blog writes: “This agreement is a significant step for all photographers trying to figure out new ways to pursue issue-oriented work and survive the changes that have upended editorial photography. Nostalgia won’t bring back the days of months-long assignments for a vital Life magazine or a Farm Security Administration that sends giants like Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans into the field.”
